Online games are computer games which are played over the internet, although the term online games could be used to describe games played over any type of computer network it is generally reserved for those played on the internet. There are numerous types of online games spanning almost every conceivable type of computer game and they are enjoyed by many people the world over.

 

One particularly popular style of online game is the genre known as MMORPG, which stands for massively multiplayer online role playing game, the most famous example of which would be World of Warcraft. These games can involve many thousands of players who are able to interact in a variety of different ways, they are also noted for there highly addictive nature. These types of online games are usually very involved and players have been known to invest many hundreds of hours of their time into them. The incredibly immersive nature of some of these games has faced criticism in the press.

 

Online games are now big business, which can be put down to increased accessibility to internet and the broadband connections which are now commonplace in many people’s homes. Broadband technology has allowed for developments in online games which would previously have been unachievable. Most newly released computer games will have some form of online capability and many of the latest games intended to played solely online will charge players a monthly subscription fee.

 

Traditional games persuits such as bingo and casino games have also found a whole new market through their online operations, with the online gambling market predicted to be worth in excess of $16 billion by the end of 2009.
