PC Games

PC games are computer games which are played on a PC rather than on a specific games console or an arcade machine. The earliest examples of PC games were arguably first seen in the late sixties, although PC games in the modern sense of the term experienced their largest boom in popularity early nineties as home PCs became more affordable and commonplace.

Although the market for PC games has always been in direct competition with the games console market PC games have a large and dedicated fan base, many of them preferring PC games due to their online capabilities or because of the scope for ’modding’. Modding is one of the most popular aspects of many PC games, and a wealth of user created content and add-ons for games known as ‘mods’ are available online. The popularity of many PC games, notable Half Life stems from the fact that users are easily able to modify the code to produce their own new variants.

PC games have frequently been subject to a certain level of controversy in the press, usually to due to violence or other content deemed to be harmful. However, lately the main criticism levelled at PC games, particularly multiplayer online games such as World of Warcraft is their highly addictive nature. There have been several reported cases of people who have been affected by a severe addiction to online PC games, including a well documented case of a Korean man who died in an internet cafe from exhaustion and dehydration after playing a PC game for 50 hours solid.
